Occupational Therapy for Veteran Kids

Educational Functional Capacity Assessments

We provide targeted educational assessments that are aimed specifically at veteran children with learning difficulties or suspected learning conditions. We understand many veteran children are doing it tough at school, and our aim is to even the playing field, ensuring our veteran children get a fair go in the education system.

That is why we provide comprehensive occupational recommendations to schools and parents. Our functional capacity assessments look at the classroom environment, home environment and provide essential recommendations to help veteran children with a wide range of conditions that are impacting their schooling.

FAQs

  • Yes!

Our allied health services are conducted remotely to ensure that you have timely access to highly qualified practitioners. Large components of our services involve detailed reports and recommendations, which is very suitable for telehealth.

Many of our children come from trauma backgrounds, which means they are most comfortable in their own home.

  • Yes, our co-founder, Jesse is a veteran. Jesse enlisted into the Australian Army as a cavalry soldier at 19 years old. Jesse deployed on operations domestically and overseas. Because of these experiences and life in the ADF, Jesse saw first hand the shortfalls that arise in education that directly impacted the children of the veteran community due to learning conditions and learning difficulties. Jesse, co-founded Shield Health Support with a goal to provide the holistic support that defence families deserve. Jesse is passionate about helping as many veterans (and their kids) as possible.

Kye, our other founder, has a thorough understanding of the educational entitlements of veteran children. Kye's passion for veteran children has been exemplified through his work at Shield Tuition helping complex families navigate DVA's family support channels. He is concurrently studying a Doctor of Medicine soon to graduate as Medical Doctor.

  • Many of our current veteran children receive both DVA support and NDIS support. A very common question is whether children can receive both?

The short is answer is yes.

Some NDIS participants prefer to use DVA to fund their OT sessions so that they can use their NDIS for other supports. This is because NDIS will not fund supports that work to enhance a child's schooling. DVA's OT funding however, is focussed on improving a child's capacity at school. Many families receiving NDIS are grateful for their support but often find there is no cross over to helping their kids do well at school.

    That is where we differ!
